Who is Donald Trump- Find out here

Long before he was a contender for the US presidency, Donald Trump was America’s most famous and colourful billionaire.

Once considered a long shot, Trump is now the next president of the United States.

Scepticism over Trump’s candidacy stemmed not only from his controversial platform on immigration and outrageous campaign style, but from his celebrity past.

But the 70-year-old businessman had the last laugh when he defied all predictions to beat much more seasoned politicians in the Republican primary race.

And he has now gone a step further by winning the presidential election, after one of the most divisive and controversial contests in living memory against Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.

Early life

Mr Trump is the fourth child of New York real estate tycoon Fred Trump. Despite the family’s wealth, he was expected to work the lowest-tier jobs within his father’s company and was sent off to a military academy at age 13 when he started misbehaving in school.

He attended the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and became the favourite to succeed his father after his older brother, Fred, chose to become a pilot. Fred Trump died at 43 due to alcoholism, an incident that his brother says led him to avoid alcohol and cigarettes his entire life.

Mr Trump says he got into real estate with a “small” $1m loan from his father before joining the company. He helped manage his father’s extensive portfolio of residential housing projects in the New York City boroughs, and took control of the company – which he renamed the Trump Organization – in 1971.

His father died in 1999. “My father was my inspiration,” Mr Trump said at the time.

The mogul

Mr Trump shifted his family’s business from residential units in Brooklyn and Queens to glitzy Manhattan projects, transforming the rundown Commodore Hotel into the Grand Hyatt and erecting the most famous Trump property, the 68-storey Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue. Other properties bearing the famous name followed – Trump Place, Trump World Tower, Trump International Hotel and Tower, and so on. There are Trump Towers in Mumbai, Istanbul and the Philippines.

Mr Trump also developed hotels and casinos, an arm of the business that has led to four bankruptcy filings (for the businesses, not personal bankruptcy).

Mr Trump also built an empire in the entertainment business. From 1996 until 2015, he was an owner in the Miss Universe, Miss USA, and Miss Teen USA beauty pageants. In 2003, he debuted an NBC reality television show called The Apprentice, in which contestants competed for a shot at a management job within Mr Trump’s organisation. He hosted the show for 14 seasons, and claimed in a financial disclosure form that he was paid a total of $213m by the network during the show’s run.

He has written several books, and owns a line of merchandise that sells everything from neckties to bottled water. According to Forbes, his net worth is $3.7bn, though Mr Trump has repeatedly insisted he is worth $10bn.

The husband and father

Trump has been married three times, though his most famous wife was his first – Ivana Zelnickova, a Czech athlete and model. The couple had three children – Donald Jr, Ivanka and Eric – before they filed for divorce in 1990. The ensuing court battle made for numerous stories in the tabloid press. Those stories included allegations that Trump was abusive towards Ivana, though she later downplayed the incidents.

He married actress Marla Maples in 1993. They had a daughter named Tiffany together before divorcing in 1999. He married his current wife Melania Knauss, a model, in 2005, and the couple have one son, Barron William Trump.

His children from his first marriage now help run Trump Organization, though he is still chief executive.

The election winner

Mr Trump’s campaign for the presidency was rocked by controversies, including the emergence of a recording from 2005 of him making lewd remarks about women, and claims, including from members of his own party, that he was not fit for office.

But he consistently told his army of supporters that he would defy the opinion polls, which mostly had him trailing Hillary Clinton, and that his presidency would strike a blow against the political establishment and “drain the swamp” in Washington.

He took inspiration from the successful campaign to get Britain out of the European Union, saying he would pull off “Brexit times 10”.

It was something few pundits believed would happen as polling day approached, despite his campaign receiving a late boost from fresh controversy over an FBI investigation into his opponent’s emails.

He will be the first US president never to have held elected office or served in the military, meaning that he has already made history before he is sworn in as America’s 45th president in January. -BBC

National Assembly nowadays is a house of actions say Hon Soipan

More than 50 resolutions out of the hundreds passed in the 11th Parliament have been implemented by the executive.

Implementation committee chairperson Soipan Tuya said adopted committee reports, legislation, and petitions from MPs and the public means the House is no longer a talk-shop.

“Our duty is to ensure the executive acts on the resolutions of the House for the good of the people,” Tuya, who is Narok county woman representative, said in her team's progress report.

The committee serves as the link between the National Assembly and the Executive. Its key role, according to standing orders, is to follow up on the implementation status of resolutions adopted by the House and appraise members.

“It must be noted that these resolutions act as triggers to get the Executive wing of the government to act,” said Tuya.

Among implemented resolutions was the Sh600 million allocation in this year's budget for the operationalisation of the Kenya Police Reservist in arid and semi- arid lands, among them Turkana and West Pokot.

The allocation is expected to review the terms and conditions for KPR officers, who play a key complimentary role to the mainstream security system.

The committee also ensured the allocation of Sh80 million to the livestock insurance policy in 2014/15, Sh300 million for 2015/16 and Sh500 million for the current financial year.

In January, payouts were made in Wajir with 275 farmers from Diff and Butte divisions benefiting to the tune of Sh3.5 million. Zero-rating of animal feeds to enable farmers enjoy higher returns on their investments, as part of reviewing farm gate milk prices, is contained in the current financial year's budget.

Others include the resolution on the National Disaster Management Authority, for which a draft bill has been prepared by the line ministry to establish the body.

Huduma centres and mobile registration units were set up to facilitate the issuance of identity cards to all eligible Kenyans. The National Youth Council is also fully operational following the release of Sh34.2 million and the reduction on the National Hospital Insurance Fund penalty, from 500 per cent to 25 per cent surcharged for late payments.

Tuya said the NHIF has already effected the reduction administratively as it awaits the proposed amendments to the NHIF Act.

According to Governor Ole Tunai, parts of East and Central Narok have been adversely affected by the prolonged drought.

He blamed the dropping water levels on the uncontrolled cutting down of trees in Mau forest.

“Shortage of water has increased cases of human-wildlife conflict in Maasai Mara. The uncontrolled cutting down of trees in Mau Forest due to growing human population is to blame for the drought,” he said.

William Ole Ntimama's birth was fore told by a Laibon to his Father the Late Koillapa Ntimama many years before he was born in 1927. The Laibon prophesied that two of his wives will give birth to sons on the same day.

William Ole Ntimama was born to Senkeinta Ntimama and he rose to be a great man. His facial complexion wasn't uniform; his right side was darker when the left was lighter. When he got annoyed, it is said a clear distinction would be seen on his face.

MAASAI MARA UNIVERSITY STUDENTS PROTEST AS LECTURERS DOWN TOOLS OVER UPAID SALARIES

Maasai Mara University students in Narok County took to the streets on Thursday to protest the continued absence of lecturers from classrooms over a salary dispute.

Lecturers have boycotted parallel classes for the last three weeks citing a salary payment dispute with the institution’s management.

The tutors say they have not been paid from as long as 2013 and some are owed up to Sh2 million in arrears by the institution.

They have threatened to withhold examination results until the university settles their arrears.

Some of the striking lecturers who spoke to the Nation, said part-time tutors in at the university have not been paid for a long time, even after being asked to teach without pay for the last three years.

“How do you meet your financial obligations if you are working and you can’t be paid at the end of the month? We are tired and that is why we have downed our tools,” said the Secretary General of the Part Time Lecturers Association Mr Meshack Lagat.

Part-time lecturers have no union to present their grievances, making it difficult for them to push their case in a coordinated way.

Mr Joshua Karia said he started work in August 2013, under a deal that showed he would be paid Sh1,500 per hour for undergraduate classes.

He is now demanding over Sh2 million from the university in in unpaid salaries. “This cry of distress, expressed by a part-time lecturers in Narok, is not isolated. It represents the feelings of many other lecturers in different public universities in Kenya, we are being taken for a ride,” said Mr Karia.

Town campus students under the privately sponsored students’ programme who are among those affected by the strike staged a peaceful protest march to the Main campus situated at Total estate- three kilometers from Narok town.

They sought audience with the university’s vice chancellor Professor Mary Walingo who later addressed them at the university’s main campus, promising to address all their issues.

The students’ leaders Mr Justus Dikirr, Mr Moses Nkamasiai, and Mr Clement Nkaanti faulted the University for failing to pay the lecturers, arguing that it has collected more than Sh200 million in school fees.

"We are wondering why they are not being paid yet we have paid fees," said Mr Dikirr who led the demonstrations.

"The country and our parents must know we are being 'wasted' yet fees has been paid. Corruption is running the university; money meant to pay lecturers is stolen by senior officials." said Mr Dikirr.

Besides Osinoni declaration, KONCHELLAH declare to defend his seat 2017

#UASINGISHU OSINONI DECLARATION MADE KILGORIS MP G. S. KONCHELLAH APPEAR TO ROAR,

Be as it may, I think osinoni declaration that endorse Ole Siparo did without the consent of Sitelu. However, the move is a sign of boldness & Change rediations lingering.

The second thought however may be; Sitelu may be aware of that game which will bring to "law of power" that Says "CONTROL THE OPTIONS" which KONCHELLAH may be applying.

The best deceptions are the ones that seem to give the other person a choice: Your victims feel they are in control,
but are actually your puppets.

Give people options that come out in your favor whichever one they choose. Force them to make choices between the lesser of two evils, both of which serve your purpose. Put them on the horns of a dilemma, Colour the choices, Alter the playing field & Force the Resister.

● They are gored wherever they turn.
● They are often a matter of a choice simply between A and B, with the rest of the alphabet out of the picture.
● As long as the faintest mirage of choice flickers on, they rarely focus on the missing options.
● They "choose" to believe that the game is fair, and that we have their freedom.

LAW LOCKS OUT POLITICIANS WITHOUT DEGREE & MCAs from vyieng

The National Assembly’s Legal Affairs Committee has adopted proposed amendments by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.

The amendments say that all contestants for seats in the bicameral Parliament should be holders of at least a university degree – attained at least five years before an election.

The Elections Laws (Amendment) Bill, spearheaded by the committee chaired by Ainabkoi MP Samuel Chepkong’a, also wants MCAs be diploma holders in 2017, and degree holders in subsequent polls, a requirement that has sparked controversy.

The law currently states that one should have post-graduate qualifications, a provision the IEBC views as ambiguous.

In 2012, more than half of the lawmakers nearly locked themselves out of contention after they approved a section in the Elections Act, requiring aspirants for the presidential, governor and parliamentary seats to be degree holders.

However, the law was later amended to provide that MPs and senators only require “a post-secondary education”, a terminology the IEBC says is ambiguous.

Apart from being one of the longest-serving African heads of states, President Robert Mugabe is known for his witty and sometimes foolish quotes.

1. Any man who successfully convinces a monkey that honey is sweeter than banana, is capable of selling condoms to a Roman father.
2. Dear ladies, if your boyfriend didn’t wish you a happy Mother’s Day or sing Sweet Mother for you, you should stop breastfeeding him.
3. He who swallows a complete coconut has absolute trust in his anus.
4. Dear sisters, don’t be deceived by a man who texts you “I miss you” only when it’s raining, because you are not an umbrella.
5. Swimming pool is more useful than Liverpool.
6. If over 15 guys have sucked your breasts, you don’t need to call those things “your breasts”. It’s called COW BELL, OUR MILK! Repeat after me, OUR MILK!
7. It’s hard to bewitch African girls these days. Every time you take a piece from her hair to the witch doctor, either a Brazilian innocent woman gets mad or a factory in China catches fire.
8. All I hear always is, ‘No sex before marriage?’ If that was God’s plan, then you would receive your penis or vagina on your wedding day.
9. The only warning Africans take serious is LOW BATTERY.
10. Men sucking lady’s breast is normal because the act was learnt in childhood when they were young but the act of lady’s sucking men’s d*ck is what baffles me. Where did they learn it from?
11. Whenever things seem to start going well in your life, the Devil comes along and gives you a ‘girlfriend’.
12. When your clothes are made of cassava leaves, you don’t take a goat as a friend.
13. If you have attended over 100 weddings in your life and are still single, you are not different from a canopy.
14. Dating a slim/slender guy is cool. The problem is when you are lying on his chest then his ribs draw Adidas lines on your face.
15. If you are ugly, you are ugly. Stop talking about inner beauty because men don’t walk around with X-rays to see inner beauty.
16. Respect pregnant women because it’s not easy walking around with evidence that you’ve had sex.
17. Some of the girls of today can’t even jog for five minutes but they expect a guy to last in bed with you for two hours? Your level of selfishness demands a one-week crusade.
18. I stopped trusting ladies when my class three girlfriend left me for another boy all because he bought a sharpener with a mirror.
19. Nothing makes a woman more confused than being in a relationship with a “broke” man who’s extremely good in bed.
20. Witchcraft is when a 24-year-old girl who cannot jog for five minutes expects a 40-year-old man to last for one hour in bed.
21. Being dumped by a dark-skinned girl is the worst thing ever, because anytime you get home and see charcoal, you become emotional.
22. Women with beauty and no brains, it is your private parts that will suffer the most.
23. When one’s goat gets missing, the aroma of a neighbour’s soup gets suspicious.

25. Even Satan wasn’t gay; he approached naked Eve instead of naked Adam. Say no to same-sex marriage.
26. If you are a married man and you find yourself attracted to schoolgirls, just buy your wife a school uniform.
27. It is every man’s dream to remove a woman’s pant one day but NOT when it’s on a drying line.
28. Virginity is the best wedding gift any man would receive from his newlywed wife but lately, there’s nothing as such any longer because it’ll have already been given out as a Birthday gift, token of Appreciation, Job assurance, Church collection, Examination marking schemes and for Lorry fares!”
29. Treat every part of your towel nicely because the part that wipes your buttocks today will wipe your face tomorrow.
30. We are living in a generation where people “in love” are free to touch each others’ private parts but cannot touch each others’ phones because they’re “private”.
31. Sometimes you look back at girls you spent money on rather than send it to your mum and you realise witchcraft is real.
32. If President Barack Obama wants me to allow marriage for same-sex couples in my country(Zimbabwe), he must come here so that I marry him first.
33. South Africans will kick down a statue of a dead white man but won’t even attempt to slap a live one. Yet they can stone to death a black man simply because he’s a foreigner.
34. What is the problem? We now have aeroplanes which can take them back quicker than the ships used by their ancestors.
35. Mr Bush, Mr Blair and now Mr Brown’s sense of human rights precludes our people’s right to their God-given resources, which in their view must be controlled by their kith and kin. I am termed dictator because I have rejected this supremacist view and frustrated the neocolonialists.

39. Interviewer: Mr President, when are you bidding the people of Zimbabwe farewell? Robert: Where are they going?
40. My dear ladies, please don’t buy a selfie stick when your armpit itself needs a shaving stick.

Kakamega residents oppose Gov. Oparanya

Residents of Kakamega have opposed plans by the county government to fund funeral expenses for the late Soita Shitanda . Led by Dennis Weche, Musa Ekaya, and Ibrahim Muchelule, they argue that it is illegal and illogical to use tax payers' money to foot funeral expenses of the former minister. While consoling Shitanda's family, Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya said his government will cater for medical and funeral expenses to give the late politician a decent send-off.

Road works in narok town, Silencing Governor Tunai Critics.

Like as he promised during the launch of #TejoOlami, the dream and Governor Tunai's mission to tarmack narok town 40km road is coming to pass.

With the surbubs of narok town the Road work, construction of calveats and road gravelling has been the order of the day with presence of heavy machines, caterpillars and lorries with specialised manpower manning several roads in narok town.

This among other key projects are the one giving Governor Tunai critics a hard time to showcase their abilities in questioning county government.

The critics have been riding on a narative that roads will remain the same, and floods will be the order, the hypothesis has however been proven futile and the mere allegations didn't stand the test of time.

Government bans prayer days and Visiting day in schools

There will be no more visiting days in boarding schools in third term, Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has said.

Prayer days and mid terms have also been abolished.

Dr Matiang'i said on Wednesday that the move is aimed at curbing cheating in KCPE and KCSE examinations.

Over 5,000 2015 KCSE results were canceled over malpractices.

Prior and during the exams, exam questions circulated on social media, a phenomenon that raised concern among Education stakeholders and Kenyans over the credibility of the national exams.

In March 2016, Kenya National Examination Council (Knec) board was disbanded by Dr Matiang'i over widespread exam malpractices.

Former University of Nairobi Vice-Chancellor Prof George Magoha was appointed as the new chairman of the board.

He replaced Prof Kabiru Kinyanjui, who was sacked. The government also ordered the arrest of the council’s chief executive officer Joseph Kivilu and eight other senior officer over examination irregularities.

Anti-IEBC Demonstration to continue untill Jubilee agree to Dialogue- Says Raila

By Raila Odinga

MEETING WITH THE CLERGY: ANTI-IEBC DEMOS TO CONTINUE UNTIL A PUBLIC COMMITMENT BY JUBILEE TO DIALOGUE

FOUNDATION

The basis of all our action is premised on the very first article  of our constitution which states, “All sovereign power belongs to the people of Kenya and shall be exercised only in accordance with this Constitution”.

The constitution then, after first declaring that the people can exercise this sovereignty directly, donates that sovereignty to “democratically elected representatives” by saying that the people could also exercise their sovereignty through them.

To emphasize to these representatives that they are only agents of the people, the constitution proceeds to tell each and every institution what its work is, how it must be carried out and the principles that must guide that institution when it carries out its work.

BACKGROUND

1. PARLIAMENTARY ROUTE

A common misconception currently prevailing in certain sections of society is that once people set up institutions, they lose all power over any issues that are meant to be resolved by those institutions.

Yet modern progressive constitutions are very clear that the people are the ultimate authority over any institution set up in the constitution.

Unfortunately, under the Jubilee Administration, this trust bestowed upon institutions has been betrayed many times over. Very little regard is given to our national values and principles when institutions are exercising the sovereignty donated to them by the people. Parliament has been particularly notorious. Using its majority in the Houses, the Jubilee administration has used Parliament to pass laws and motions that compromise the interests of the people on whose behalf Parliament exercises the legislative authority of the Republic.

This is how the National Assembly came to dismiss a petition that was filed against the commissioners of the IEBC for mismanagement and corruption.

The petition, filed by Mr Wafula Buke mid-2014, laid out various charges against the commissioners, which alleged that they had failed in their work and that they had been corrupt. Mr. Buke’s petition was buried in accusations that he had been sent by CORD to fight the commissioners and in the end he was never accorded serious consideration. Jubilee marshaled its numbers in the House and threw out the petition. The contents of Mr Buke’s petition never made it to the platform of national debate.

There is now before the National Assembly a report of the Public Accounts Committee that has found chairman Isaack Hassan, commissioners Thomas Letangule and Mohamed Alawi guilty of interfering with the procurement of these devices.

The committee also wants full investigations launched against Hassan, the Commission’s CEO Ezra Chiloba and the eight commissioners for the loss of KSh4 billion of taxpayers’ money.

But like it did with the Buke petition, Parliament is again likely to betray the people and decide the fate of the report based on the political interests of Jubilee.

2. THE ETHICS AND ANTIC-CORRUPTION ROUTE

Parliament is not the only forum in which the people are being betrayed by institutions to whom they have donated their sovereignty. The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission has obstinately refused to charge Hassan and his co-commissioners who participated in ChickenGate with corruption, despite the fact the existing evidence has successfully prosecuted the bribe-givers in a London court.

Is it to mean then that the people are helpless? Is it conceivable that the people who empowered the institutions to work for them have now to sit helplessly and watch as these institutions betray them? Could the servants have now become more important than the masters?

3. POPULAR REFORM

As a Coalition, we thereafter made the resolution to pursue electoral  reform through popular initiative, an effort we dubbed ‘Okoa Kenya.’ We constituted a Committee of Experts comprising of some of the best legal minds in the country that drafted Okoa Kenya Constitution Amendment Bill. We collected a total of 1.6 million signatures on the backdrop of this bill. This was 600,000 above the constitutional threshold. These signatures were duly submitted for verification as registered voters as provided for in the law.

It is important to note that the IEBC as a commission was subject of the proposed bill. The Commission then sat on the collected signatures beyond the ninety day period provided for in law until agitation on our part prompted their action. They began verification after the ninety day period. Prior to the announcement of the outcome of the process, several key Jubilee officials including National Assembly Majority Leader Hon. Aden Duale and TNA Chairman Hon. Johnson Sakaja came out publicly to claim that the signatures submitted were fake. These legislators even went as far as giving the break-down of the numbers. The IEBC later came out and confirmed the position put forward by Jubilee dismissing 1.6 million signatures on what can best be described as flimsy grounds. The route of popular initiative was effectively scuttled by the IEBC under dubious circumstances. Kenyans were left wondering how Jubilee knew details of the Commission’s resolution before the Commission made public its findings.

PEACEFUL PICKETING

Our constitution foresaw such possibilities and provided the now-greatly-talked-about rights under Articles 37.

Under Article 37, every Kenyan is given a right to assemble, demonstrate, picket and present petitions to public authorities.

The purpose of this right is so that the people can communicate to the institution involved their feelings about the actions and decisions of that institution. They are able to communicate what they expect from the institution and also demonstrate the levels of their emotions about the failures of the institution.

And that is why we are leading Kenyans in peaceful picketing. We intend to use this constitutional route to tell the commissioners of the IEBC that they must resign as they have failed in their duty and the public has no faith whatsoever in their ability to be impartial in a political contest in which we are contestants.

Our peaceful picketing is meant to further communicate to Parliament that the issue of the IEBC commissioners cannot be decided on a partisan basis to achieve selfish political objectives.

Moreover, our peaceful picketing is meant to communicate to the Jubilee Administration that it cannot protect the commissioners of the IEBC from the law and from a moral and conscientious duty to resign and expect that Cord will foolishly accept to participate in another election conducted by them.

Ultimately,  we are leading peaceful pickets to tell all Kenyans that they must not sit back and watch their sovereignty abused and their aspirations betrayed by an irresponsible and unaccountable regime. That is why we are returning to the streets on Monday. We are confident that the constitution is on our side as we demonstrate and we will remain defiant and undeterred by the violent reactions of the police towards us.

BRITAM POST SH 1 BILLION LOSS FOR 2015

Financial services group Britam Holdings has sunk into a Sh1 billion net loss for 2015 weighed down by poor performance of the Nairobi Securities Exchange that hit its equity assets.

The company which had in 2014 made a net profit of Sh2.5 billion said a downturn in the performance of the securities market led to a loss of Sh2.8 billion last year on its financial assets at fair value compared to a gain of Sh4.1 billion in the previous year.

Britam Holdings is among 18 other listed firms in Kenya that had issued a profit warning for the 2015 trading period. In 2014, only 11 companies had issued profit warnings, a pointer to the tough environment companies faced last year.

Data from the NSE shows investors lost Sh250 billion last year as a result of the market's bear run compared to 2014. The value of their wealth as measured by market capitalisation dropped to Sh2.05 trillion in 2015 from Sh2.30 trillion a year before, the end-year statistics by the NSE indicate.

Despite the poor returns from its equity investments, Britam recorded a 38 per cent rise in revenue to Sh20.3 billion from Sh14.7 billion in 2014. Revenue from insurance business grew by 40 per cent to Sh19.6 billion from Sh14 billion previously.

Income from property investments increased by 31 per cent to Sh4.6 billion from Sh3.5 billion. The holding company's assets rose by seven per cent to a total value of Sh77.6 billion.

KCB LOSES BID TO BUY CHASE BANK TO QATARI LENDER

KENYA's largest lender by assets, KCB Group, has reportedly lost its bid to purchase distressed Chase Bank.

KCB is said to have come in third from four bids the Central Bank of Kenya received for purchase of the SME lender.

Chase Bank went down after misreported insider loans caused depositors to make a run on it.

Qatari lender, QNB, the second largest bank in Africa and the Middle East, is said to be the front runner to take over Chase Bank.

If it is successful, it will take over an entity with an enviable portfolio of small businesses that other banks have been angling for to drive their growth.
Rand Merchant Bank of South Africa was reportedly second in the bid with KCB coming in third. CBK has yet to formally make any official announcement regarding the matter but insiders indicate QNB may get the nod.

Chase shareholders have been pushing for CBK to bring in someone to run the bank rather than go the Good Bank - Bad Bank way which they feel would destroy the lender.

Also being mentioned is French lender BNP Paribas but this is seen as a long shot with few European lenders seeking to expand on the continent. Nedbank SA has equally been mentioned as a possible candidate.

OPARANYA VS WETANGULA

GOVERNOR WYCLIFFE OPARANYA ASKS FORD KENYA TO FOLD UP:

I take serious issue with Hon Moses Wetangula’s weekend call to the Luhya community to join Ford- Kenya and reject any politician who is not in this party.

That statement goes against the spirit of the coalition and raises questions about Hon Wetangula’s commitment to CORD and why the coalition should back him when he is wrecking, undermining and weakening it from within.

As ODM Deputy Party Leader, I wish to let Hon Wetangula know that ODM is the party with the largest following and highest number of elected leaders in Western Kenya. It is a fact that Ford Kenya has only three elected MPs in all of former Western Province. There is a problem when big rivers begin to join small rivers.

I therefore advise anyone from this region who wants to ascend to national leadership, including Hon Wetangula, to join ODM instead of fighting it.

I also wish to remind Hon Wetangula that when the Luhya community rallied behind ODM leader Raila Odinga and Musalia Mudavadi and won elections in 2007, he is one of the people who teamed up with Mt Kenya colleagues to frustrate and steal that victory. At that time, even our neighbours from the Rift Valley had teamed up with us to form a formidable western alliance that would have kept power in this region.

The stolen ODM victory was the clearest path for the Luhya community to get the Presidency. Raila would certainly have handed over power to Musalia Mudavadi whom he proceeded to make a Deputy Prime Minister under the Grand Coalition Government in addition to making Hon Kenneth Marende the best Speaker of the National Assembly that Kenya has had.
In Kenya’s highly tribal politics, ODM, which is the single largest party in the country, offers the best chance for the Luhya community to ascend to power. Our best bet as a community is to stay in ODM and position ourselves to use it to ascend to power. Kenya is big, divided and complex. We will navigate it using a large party that has learnt the art of navigation, not through a party struggling in one or two counties. Our community will follow an arrangement that enhances its chances and uplifts rather than diminishes the stature of its leaders. Wetangula should fold up Ford Kenya and join the community in ODM. Good leaders listen to and follow their people.

Nairobi county Speaker Alex Sanaika Ole Magelo opposes mau forest excision

Nairobi assembly speaker Alex Magelo has faulted the Cabinet's proposal to cut off 17,000 hectares of the Maasai Mau forest.

He urged the government to shelve the plans because "it did not involve all stakeholders before coming up with the decision".

Speaking to press on phone yesterday, Magelo said the Maasai community will invade the forest to safeguard the forest if the state does not shelve its plans.

“It is disrespectful for the community, which has protected the forest. The state to come up with plans and cut out a section of the forest with the plans to resettle squatters. Even the Maasai community has squatters but it should be protected with all cost,” said a tough talking Magelo.

The speaker said if the government was serious with the conservation, they should have involved community because they have lived to protect it.

IF THERE IS NOTHING TO HIDE; SIMPLY PUBLISH THE NAMES OF CORD'S REFERENDUM SIGNATURES ; Johnson Sakaja TELLS IEBC

Our attention has been drawn to remarks made by CORD leadership today with respect to the verification of signatures presented to the IEBC purportedly in support of the Okoa Kenya referendum drive.

Once again the leadership of cord has tried to draw a nexus between the IEBC and Jubilee in their now monotonous chorus that IEBC is Jubilee and Jubilee is IEBC.

Provisions relating to the amendment of the Constitution are very clearly provided for in the law. One of the requirements in the law is that any effort to amend the constitution by means of a referendum must be supported by at least 1 million signatures.

We reiterate and assert our position that the IEBC cannot purport to verify signatures without involving the public as the IEBC does not have a repository of sample/ specimen signatures of voters.

We demand that the IEBC do publish to the public the names and signatures presented to them by CORD for the PEOPLE themselves to verify if indeed they appended their signatures in support of the referendum drive or if these signatures were procured fraudulently.

(We also note that in their press conference, CORD did not denounce the possibility of fake signatures; their only question is how did we know).

It is neither for Jubilee to determine the veracity of the signatures nor is it in the position of the IEBC to verify signatures they do not have.

IF THERE IS NOTHING TO HIDE; SIMPLY PUBLISH THE NAMES.

Mr. Speaker Sir, Thank you very much for this opportunity.

Ladies and gentlemen, members of this August house, It is not every day in Kenya that we get an opportunity to address such a historic body. A body made “Historic” by the great men and women that have passed through these doors over the years. Men and women, borne of the unique honor to represent the people of Kenya, whether young or old, poor or wealthy, privileged or oppressed, or as has recently come to be, Jubilee or CORD.

I come to you today, as a proud son of Malindi constituency in Kilifi County, proud of my heritage but burdened by the history of my people. Elated at our victory, but laden by the unfortunate circumstances that accompanied my ascension to this house. Circumstances of which I hope, this body shall allow me to address in further detail later, and propose some corrective measures during this speech.

I would first like to thank the Almighty God, for having seen us through this journey. The bible in Mathew 11;28 says, “Come to me, all ye who are weary and heavily laden, and I will give you rest”. We put our faith in God and he has been faithful to us as well.

I would also like to express my profound appreciation to the people of Malindi, for turning out in large numbers and voting to appoint me as their representative in this house. Many were called, but in the end there was one. I would like to invite my worthy adversaries, to join me in building the lives of our people. We shall have another opportunity to compete in a few months, but for now, lets work together.

As a candidate and now legislator, I remain indebted to the leadership of my party – the Orange Democratic Movement. I am here not only to advocate for the interests of my people in Malindi, but to push and promote the policies of ODM. This, I promise I will do without fear or favor. I will guard the noble legacy of the Orange Movement; that is Devolution, the Constitution of Kenya, and fight against injustice & inequality…as demanded for by the people of Kenya.

Individually, I would like to express my sincerest gratitude to my party leader, the Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga. I would like thank him for the tireless effort in my campaigns. I would like to tell him that no amount of distortion, persecution, and historical revisionism, shall erode your contribution to making Kenya what it is today. As a member of the movement, we shall stand steadfast in seeing our dream realized.

I would also like to thank my CORD principals, H.E. Kalonzo Musyoka and the Hon. Moses Wetang'ula, for the support they gave me. Our coalition would not be the same without you, please accept my gratitude.

I also want to thank my friend Governor Amason Kingi of our beloved Kilifi County, I look forward to developing jointly some policies and programs that will be helpful to the people of Malindi, asante sana.

I particularly would like to personally thank Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho. It was a pleasure working with you. I also would like to tell you to stand strong. That truth, courage and justice, weathers all storms. We in ODM, being the party borne of constitutional agitation, recognize that all this amounts to modern day persecution.

As citizens of this great nation of Kenya, we all have the right to administrative action that is expeditious, efficient, lawful, reasonable and procedurally fair, according to Article 47 (1) and (2) of the Constitution of this country. This is a constitutional test, that the Cabinet Minister of the Interior and the Inspector General have failed, so completely and miserably. It is hardly reasonable, nor fair, to consider temperament as the basis for adverse administrative action. To the best of my knowledge, that is the preserve of psychiatrists not soldiers. Discretion does not mean power; it lives within the confines of good judgment.

To both of them, I realize that you are children of a different time and products of a different dispensation, but I would like to remind you both, that the old days are gone, and gone forever. This country shall NEVER go backwards. Liberty once achieved shall be guarded by generations to come.

I remain thankful to all those that helped me to this house. Though it is not possible to mention you all by name, I thank you all.

I would wish to address the electoral conduct of this by-election. A lot has been said about Malindi. People that do not understand the culture and people of Malindi have drowned out the truth. We are a peaceful, polite and courteous community, but a dark shadow was cast over Malindi in the days leading up to and on March 7th 2016. A style and streak of politics that has never before been seen in the constituency was prevalent during the electoral period.

I would first like to address the conduct of the security services. There were wanton cases of misconduct by the security services during the just concluded Malindi by-election on March 7th 2016.

1. The security services participated in voter intimidation that contributed to the low 48% electoral turnout. The Elections Act of Kenya, No 24 of 2012, Part VI 65 (3) describes as an election offense, the use of force or threat of personal injury in order to induce or compel a person to vote in a particular way or refrain him/her from voting. The actions of the police and the provincial administration amount to a contravention of electoral law.
2. The deployment of the military within Kenya’s borders without National Assembly approval is in full breach of Article 241 of the constitution of Kenya. The interior ministry, upon which the Cabinet Secretary administers, therefore acted in direct contravention of the constitution from which they draw their legitimacy. The well documented deployment, on social media and elsewhere, of the Military to polling stations like Barakani Primary School and Armed Personnel Carriers (APCs) to the Tally center, amount to a direct constitutional contravention. These were not
3. The police participated in arbitrary arrests like that of ODM communications director Phillip Etale and Kwale County Assembly Member Kassim Pojjo amongst many others, without a guiding incident, a police charge, an arrest warrant or a complainant. These arrests were interestingly only implemented on members of the opposition until our direct intervention.
4. The police displayed obvious favoritism by failing to act on state agents and people affiliated to the ruling coalition in obvious voter bribery cases. The ones who were arrested were for their protection from a dissenting public and not for further prosecution. They were also un-procedurally released from custody.
5. Most bizarrely, the security services resorted to calling press statements enumerating leaders they would like to arrest. We consider this a form of intimidation.
6. There were also cases of the use of live ammunition and crowd dispersion techniques like tear gas in completely unwarranted scenarios. These merit at least an internal enquiry.

I would like to urge the Cabinet Secretary to conduct an audit and present a report for debate this house over the conduct of security services in these elections. It is a worrying trend.

I would wish to remind him of the personal responsibility standard of international statutes that befell his security predecessors. I would urge him to do all that is within his capacity to reform the conduct of the services before the next general election.

As for the IEBC, Your preparedness is increasingly becoming a matter of concern. Your recurrent inability to conduct an election and deliver a free and fair result is worrying. The IEBC did not document and take action on obvious cases of voter bribery and intimidation. They haven’t made a written complaint to the EACC, the DPP or the Police of the same. They did not address the role of security services in the polling stations. They haven’t addressed the missing names from the register and hiccups in the voting process especially technology failures. Most importantly, they have not elaborated the reasons why a county with over five times the voters in Malindi delivered a result faster than Malindi on elections held concurrently.

Our party leader has on many occasions outlined the reasons we feel this commission lacks the organizational and personnel capacity to deliver a fair result. Until now, almost four years after the last general election, the IEBC still has not done and presented an audit of the previous election.

It launched its strategic plan without the input of the stakeholders that are the political parties. Officials that have been named as counter parties in corruption by the Serious Fraud Office of the United Kingdom still hold office in Kenya where their partners in crime are serving sentences in England.

Our previous attempts to reform electoral management in Kenya through the OKOA reforms has been frustrated by claims of a lack of budget to verify signatures delivered over half a year ago. Our march today was to determine what is the problem and to put pressure for constitutional compliance to the commission.

The obviously skewed distribution of registration materials nationally is evidence of a further lack of will or outright dishonesty. The miserable failure to hit registration targets is now apparent to everyone in this country. This demonstrates a serious lack of capacity to successfully implement their programs.

After observing the events in Malindi, I would like to join the ODM family in registering our lack of confidence in the electoral commission. We do not trust them to deliver a completely free and fair general election.

I want to make a few promises to my people; my leadership and representation will be based on zero tolerance to corruption, a focus on the welfare of the people and the irreversible commitment to the elements of good governance.

It is my intention to prioritize land reform, to eliminate exploitation of indigenous coastal communities by tourism and manufacturing companies; to expand education opportunities for the youth of Malindi and to fight for improved devolution. I shall also use this platform to fight against ills that affect our people such as child prostitution, drug abuse and trafficking in Malindi. Meanwhile, I will join my party with a lot of zeal in fighting institutionalized grand corruption under this jubilee government.

For the residents of Malindi, the Coast and the beautiful Nation of Kenya, I would like to urge you to be strong, to be resilient and to carry the message of hope and courage to every corner of this nation. Most importantly, trust in God. For it is only he, that decides our fate. Every generation has to live with its challenges, the right honorable Raila Odinga and other gallant citizens have borne the greatest burden to deliver democracy to this beautiful land, it is the challenge of our generation to preserve it. Be vigilant, We will do our part. “Eternal Vigilance is the price of liberty ” – Thomas Jefferson.

May God bless you all.
