NAROK GOVERNOR Samuel Ole Tunai URGES RESIDENTS ALONG TANZANIA BORDER TO BE MORE VIGILANT ON COVID19

Following a drastic increase in confirmed cases of Covid-19 in neighbouring Tanzania, Governor Samuel Kuntai Ole Tunai has urged residents of Narok County living along the Kenyan – Tanzania border to remain vigilant.

The three Sub-Counties of Narok West, Narok South and Trans-Mara West that border Tanzania are in increased danger of infection because of a long porous border with free movement of people across the two countries.

In his regular update to the people of Narok’ on the County Government’s progress in preparedness against the Corona virus pandemic in the County, Governor Tunai cited the recent uptick of infections in Tanzania and the increase of cross-border trade in livestock and foodstuff in the three Sub-Counties as the new risk factors for the County.

He called on residents of the three Sub-Counties to take extra caution in their interaction with their Tanzania counter and where practical, to avoid all contact.

The Governor also revealed that he has requested the National Government to beef up security in the border areas and temporarily restrict movement of people across the border. The County Government will also take additional measures at the border areas, including beefing up health facilities and sensitizing residents on community surveillance.

“There is need for rapid sensitization on the role of the general public in reporting strangers crossing the border to authorities as soon as possible,” said the Governor. “This will bolster security efforts to secure the borders and what people must know is that these measures are meant to shield them from exposure to the virus.”
