Boda Boda Operators to form SACCOs says NTSA

Operators of public service motorcycles must organise
themselves into saccos by June, the government has said.

National Transport and Safety Authority deputy director of road safety Duncan Kibogong yesterday said this consolidation
will make boda bodas easier to manage.

“Right now, they operate in isolation. We don’t have their
records and we cannot even trace them when they break the
law,” Kibogong said.

He was speaking at a a forum on Traffic (Amendment) Bill,
2014, at a city hotel. Kibogong said each sacco should have at least 50 motorcycles.

Every operator should have a sacco name on the front of the
helmets and on any other clearly visible part of the motorbike,
he said.

“The management of every sacco must ensure the riders are
well trained and have all relevant documents, including a valid
license,” Kibogong said. Enhanced digital licenses will soon be issued to qualified drivers by the authority, he said.

The traffic bill seeks to regulate vehicle speed to protect
schoolchildren.

Bill sponsor Laisamis MP Joseph Lekuton said it seeks to
reduce speed limits near schools, hospitals and homes to
30km per hour. The bill also provides for construction of speed bumps and painting zebra crossing marks on roads near schools.
